Description
Khoya Thekua is the dairy-rich, festive-grade form of Bihar’s classic Chhath thekua — wheat-flour dough enriched with khoya (mawa, milk slowly reduced over a low flame) for a softer crumb and a deeper, almost fudgy sweetness that sets it apart from the everyday dry version.
Whole-wheat atta is kneaded with jaggery, fresh khoya from a partner dairy, green cardamom and pure desi ghee, then hand-pressed in wooden saanche moulds so the star pattern stays crisp on top. The frying is done gently, just enough to set the surface while the khoya keeps the inside cake-tender. The result is a thekua that eats less like a biscuit and more like a soft milk-sweet — the form Bihari households reserve for special occasions and honoured guests.
Heritage. Thekua is the defining prasad of Chhath Puja, the Sun festival kept across Bihar with days of fasting, ritual bathing and offerings at the ghats. While the plain thekua travels and keeps, the khoya variant belongs to the home table — made when a family wants something richer than the journey-food classic, often during weddings and the post-Chhath feasts.
Enjoy it with strong chai or as an afternoon festive treat; because of the dairy it is best eaten fresh. Hand-made by women home-cooks in our partner village kitchens in Bihar. Net weight 400g. Store airtight and refrigerate in warm climates. Shelf life 14 days from packing.
Ingredients: whole-wheat flour, khoya (mawa), jaggery, pure desi ghee, green cardamom. No preservatives or artificial colour. Because the khoya is dairy, we pack smaller 400g boxes and dispatch quickly; in summer we recommend refrigeration and eating within the first week for the softest, freshest bite.
From the makers
Vaishali Women’s Kitchen Collective — a group of home-cooks across Vaishali district who have hand-pressed thekua for Chhath in their own kitchens for generations. Every disc is shaped in a carved wooden saanche mould the way their mothers and grandmothers did. We pay each woman directly per batch — no middleman, no factory line. The recipe is hers; we just bring it to your door.
