Description
Til Patti is one of the oldest winter sweets of the Magadh region of Bihar, born in the lanes of Gaya where families have roasted sesame and boiled jaggery for generations. While its better-known cousin tilkut is pounded into a crumbly disc, Til Patti is poured thin and set into a glassy, golden brittle that snaps cleanly and melts into a warm, nutty sweetness. Food historians trace Gaya sesame sweets back more than a century and a half, to the patronage of the princely estate of Tekari, and even further into ancient Magadh, where sesame preparations appear in early Buddhist texts under the name palala.
What makes ours special: we source plump white sesame from the winter harvest and pair it with unrefined Bihar gud, cooked low and slow in small batches by a family-run karkhana in Gaya. There is no glucose syrup, no artificial colour and no preservatives. Each sheet is hand-poured, lightly pressed and snapped by hand, so every piece carries the rustic edges and honest crunch of a true cottage sweet rather than a factory bar.
Ingredients: white sesame seeds (til), jaggery (gud) and a touch of pure ghee. That is all.
How to enjoy: serve it as a teatime treat through the cold months, gift it during Makar Sankranti, or crumble it over warm milk for children. Sesame is naturally rich in calcium and healthy fats, which is why Bihar households have long treated Til Patti as both a festive sweet and a quiet winter strengthener. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from moisture, and it stays crisp and fresh for up to 90 days. A slow-cooked, heritage taste of Bihar winters, delivered fresh to your door.
